7 Mistakes to Avoid in Hostels

7 Mistakes to Avoid in Hostels

Choosing to stay in a hostel can be a great choice for budget travel. It’s less expensive, and you get to be part of a small community of other travelers. However, there are some things to note before packing your bags. It is a bit different than staying at a hotel or getting your own vacation rental, so you’ll want to be prepared.

I’ve compiled some mistakes I’ve made while staying in hostels, so you don’t have to make them.

Mistake #1: Not bringing a lock.

Hostels have lockers or spaces to securely put away your belongings, but many hostels do not provide locks. Occasionally the front desk will provide a lock for you, and sometimes you can rent or buy a lock, but in general you are expected to bring your own.

I have forgotten my lock before, and I had no way to lock up my bags. Luckily, I didn’t have anything stolen, but it is always anxiety-inducing to leave your things unattended in a place full of strangers.

So, definitely bring a lock for your bags. It will keep them safe and bring you peace of mind. Plus you won’t look silly or stick out, because chances are everyone around you will be locking up their bags.

Mistake #2: Forgetting shower shoes.

In hostels you’re sharing a bathroom and shower with other guests, and you don’t want to walk in barefoot. I didn’t even think to bring shower shoes when staying in a hostel for the first time, and I felt very self-conscious while barefoot in the shower. Shared showers put you at risk for warts or foot fungus, so you’ll want to protect your feet.

Most people bring cheap flip flops or sandals.

Mistake #3: Not checking amenities in advance

Most European hostels have an option to rent a towel, usually for 1 or 2 euros. Some even provide them for free. However, I once made the mistake of assuming my hostel would have towels for rent and, much to my dismay, they did not. This particular hostel had virtual check in and check out, so there wasn’t a front desk with employees. There were vending machines with some things, like deodorant and headphones, but there was no place to grab a towel.

I’ve also stayed in a hostel hoping to save money by cooking dinner, only to realize there was no kitchen.

I would recommend double checking the amenities beforehand so you can be prepared.

Mistake #4: Not taking advantage of the kitchen

When traveling on a budget, it’s always a great idea to eat snacks and cook meals for yourself to save money. Hostels have a communal kitchen with dishes, and it’s a great resource for saving money. They typically have spices available for use, and sometimes they have free tea and coffee.

Mistake #5: Not joining social activities

A lot of hostels offer social activities, like bar crawls and coffee socials. Sometimes, these may interfere with existing plans, or you may not be interested, but they can be really fun! I’ve done a few hostel dinners and events, and they’re always a blast. I’ve even seen hostels host a sunset walk, cocktail making classes, and yoga. These are great ways to stay active and have fun during your trip.

Mistake #6: Not reading reviews

This might seem obvious, but always check the reviews before booking a place. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. You’ll want to check what people are saying about cleanliness, comfortability, and customer service.

I like to search for hostels on Hostel World, which has ratings and reviews on their site.

Mistake #7: Not checking the location

Saving money on lodging is great, but you don’t want to end up spending that extra money on taxis or Ubers. You also probably don’t want to spend 45 minutes commuting to all the fun stuff every morning and evening. It’s always a good idea to check the location of the hostel, then check the distance from downtown, activities you plan to do, the train station, etc.

I hope these tips help you feel more prepared for your upcoming hostel stay. Have fun on your next adventure!
